The final lap of a session driven at reduced speed. This allows brakes and tires to cool gradually, prevents heat soak in the engine bay, and gives you a chance to mentally review the session.
The student manual warns emphatically: "At the conclusion of each track session, you will be given a cool down lap. USE IT TO COOL DOWN — yourself and your car. Slow down, use the brakes as little as possible to assist in their cooling off. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR BRAIN. The cool down lap can be extremely dangerous because, compared to your speed on the previous lap, it will feel like you're traveling very slowly. YOU'RE NOT! You're still traveling quite fast so PAY ATTENTION." The manual also gives critical post-stop instructions: "When you finally stop your car, DO NOT SET THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. DO NOT HOLD THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN WHILE THE CAR IS STOPPED" — clamping hot pads against hot rotors causes uneven heat transfer that leads to thickness variation (commonly misdiagnosed as warped rotors).
