A conversation between the driver and coach immediately after an on-track session. A good debrief covers what went well, what needs work, and sets specific goals for the next session.
The Lead-Follow Procedure Template instructs coaches to "observe and keep mental note of student(s)' driving so you can provide feedback" during the session. The Instructor Training Program emphasizes the complexity: instructors practice with "at least 6 different student characters of varying experience levels" to develop adaptive coaching skills. The HPDE Curriculum Guide (2021) lists specific debrief outcomes: drivers should be able to "discuss each upcoming on-track session with their in-car instructor and agree on one to three learning goals for the session" and "relate skills discussed in the classroom to their on-track experiences." Effective debriefs focus on 2-3 items maximum — motor learning research shows more correction targets overwhelm working memory.
