A car that leads the field at a controlled speed, typically used to start a session or bring the field together during a caution. In HPDE, pace cars help novice groups get safely onto the track at a managed pace.
The Guidelines for Pace/Safety Car Operations explains: "At the start of each race, the Pace Car should stage at a safe location adjacent to grid out. Between the five and one minute grid warning the Pace Car should proceed onto the track and prepare to be underway as the grid is released." It warns to "be prepared for the possibility of a Hold on the grid." The XX Instructor Handbook adds the HPDE warm-up procedure: "At the designated start time of warm ups, confirm with track safety that the track is clear and all proper personnel are in place. Warm ups will consist of 2 rounds whenever possible. Allow ample time for the mentorship programs to take place."
