A classification system that divides drivers into groups based on experience level. Beginners typically start in the novice group with an instructor in the car, while advanced groups allow solo driving and open passing.
The MORPCA Drivers Education Guide describes the typical color-coded system: "Blue (Intermediate, B): A driver who has been cleared to run solo, but has still modest experience, usually more than six DE events. Blue drivers are restricted to passing on straight sections." For advanced: "White (Advanced, A): A driver with considerable experience, often more than 15 events. White drivers may be permitted to pass on almost any part of the track, including curves." The HPDE Curriculum Guide (2021) defines three progression levels: at the "Initial" level, "we expect these drivers to rely on their instructors for guidance about what to do (the proper line, when to downshift, when to wave off a pass)"; at "Developing," drivers "may spend some or all of their track time driving solo" while still needing "coaching to build consistency and accuracy"; at "Accomplished," drivers demonstrate high skill independently.
